Lab Safety
During our lab work, we followed iGEM safety policy. All our experiments are conducted in the room 306 laboratory for Undergraduates, which is in the charge of Professor Na Wang. Our laboratory is classified as Biosafety Level 1, hence no pathogenic or infectious organisms posing any hazard are allowed to be used.
All our team members have finished the course Safety Protection of Laboratory and have been trained to conduct specific procedures before they started experiments about our project.
We'll manage our lab waste together and sort them in different kinds of garbage.
Animal Using
In our project, we need to do experiments of Locusta migratoria manilensis. We’ve already got the access of animal using from iGEM safety admission and followed the 3R rules. We have specific person, Mingkai He, who is in charge of cultivating and managing locusts. After the experiment was done, we'll aggregate locusts together and killed them to prevent it from escaping from the lab to the nature environment.
Project Safety
Our project aims at producing dsRNA biopesticide in order to manage and kill the locust. Considering with the RNAi effect to the environment, especially to human, plants and other species, we use BLAST to identify our dsRNA sequence. We try to avoid using sequence that has high percentage of identity to human, plants and other animals. Meanwhile, we designed our dsRNA part which still has high identity to locust gene. Finally, we designed three dsRNA basic part which would do low harm to nature. Also, our engineering fungi Sacchromyces cerevisiae and Metarhizium acridum is environment friendly and shows limit toxicity and infection to human and other animals.
